We Read, Sexualities, Queer Theory, And Qualitative...

For this week’s reading, we read â€Å"Sexualities, Queer Theory, and Qualitative Research† by Joshua Gamson. The author started out the reading by describing that sexuality is a very complex topic because it consists a lot of different categories. Besides heterosexuality, which people view it as a â€Å"norm†, we also find homosexuality (gay and lesbian) are gradually becoming more widely seen compare to the past, In the older days, people are afraid to appeal their real feelings and sexual orientation because they are afraid to â€Å"come out from the closet† and reveal their real self to the public. People think being homosexual is a shameful thing and should be kept as a secret in the past. Nowadays, people are more willing to discuss about this topic. As a result, researchers find it easier to collect information about this topic. Sexuality should be concerned to be more cultural and political, and people of homosexual should be encouraged to speak ou t their voices and let the world understand the inequalities that they had been through. Everyone should be treated equally no matter what their sexual orientation is. As soon as the researchers began to do studies about homosexuality, terms like â€Å"queer†, became challenging to be recognized. The purpose of this reading is to present how the qualitative research covers the study of terms like lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. People are always eager to figure out what makes some individuals’ sexuality different from everybody else,

Dead Man Walking Analysis Of The Movie Essay Example For Students

Dead Man Walking Analysis Of The Movie Essay People in society today have changed their feelings towards humanity and religious practises. This change is seen clearly in the movie Dead Man Walking. The characters go through changes in their view of religion and their feelings about human morality and humanity towards each other. The characters of Sister Helen, Matthew, and the victims parents all went through these changes during the movie for different reasons. These emotional changes that the characters went through are very common. Everyone changes their ideals and morals depending on their situation. Matthews ideals changed because he feared that he was going to die alone. Sister Helens feelings changed because she saw a side of Matthew that no one else was able to see. The parents of the victim Hope were filled with revenge because of what Matthew did, not why he did it. The father of the victim Walter was very sympathetic, he understanding of what Matthew was going through. SISTER HELEN Sister Helen was very unsure about what she was doing in life. She became a nun to give back to the community which gave her good Christian morals and values. By becoming a nun she was able to teach others to respect life and become more like Jesus A Son of God. As a child Sister Helen was taught to be very supportive and to give this support to those who needed her help. When confronted with Matthew, Sister Helen tries to see the good in him and show him the respect she believes he deserves. She believes that there is good in all man and that every person deserves respect. Sister Helen understands that what Matthew did was wrong, but she also knows that every person is worth more than their worst act, and that ,No man deserves to die . . . . In Sister Helens mind every man deserves a chance. From insight into her background and Christian upbringing Sister Helen is able to see and feel for Matthew as a person and not as an object of scum or as a monster . The medias understanding and the victims parents understanding is that Sister Helen believes that Matthew was wronged by the system. They feel like they have been betrayed by a Gods messenger Sister Helen. To them Sister Helen is on Matthews side by helping him find God. Sister Helen is being torn apart because she does no want to hurt anyones feelings. She is compassionate and sympathetic to everyones feelings, but does not mean to hurt any by her actions of helping a murderer find God. At the end of the movie Sister Helen wants Matthew to see a face of love Hers not one of hate and resentment The Victims Parents. This means a lot to her because she has seen Matthew the person no longer Matthew the monster. Sister Helen felt compassionate towards Matthew because of the person he had become through getting to know her and understand what she believed and wanted. MATTHEW At the beginning of the movie Matthew is rude and abrupt to Sister Helen thats what happens on death row, you start to hate and resent everyone. Matthew never thought that he would be visiting with a nun. Soon Matthew trusts Sister Helen and persuades her to help him by filing a petition not to kill him by lethal injection. This was a turning point in his attitude in understanding right and wrong. Matthew thinks that he got screwed by the system thats why hes going to die, not because he did something wrong. Matthew never had anyone that really cared about him except Sister Helen. .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d , .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .postImageUrl , .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d , .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:hover , .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:visited , .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:active { border:0!important; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:active , .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uaf7a15ed7702812a19c85b662ba1527d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Poetry Analysis for you EssayMatthew was always lonely and only cared about number one Himself . By talking and sharing with Sister Helen he starts to understand what he did was wrong. Matthews mother was asked to pled for his life. This allowed the media and the parents of the victims to see him as someones child much like their own, and to explain that he was good boy not a monster. She explained in court that he had, had a hard life but he was a good boy. Matthew wanted to protect his mother and not let her see him on trial for what he did. Matthew wanted to keep his pride by not seeing his mother crying for him. He wanted her to be happy and to not worry about him. This compassion is crucial to the total change in ideals and morals that Matthew has now After knowing Sister Helen. Matthew was going through a lot of changes now that he was going to die within a week. His understanding of life and humanity changed drastically from being a racist, saying that all the Black are victims and keep having slavery, to feeling compassion to everyone. Many of these feelings are because of his understanding of human life, as his life nears the end. This changes are all caused by the situation he is in. At the end Matthew hopes that the father of Walter the victim can forgive him and accept that he knows what he was wrong and should be punished for it, but not punished to death. Hopes farther does forgive him at the vary end of the movie. As for the parents of Hope, Matthew hopes that his death makes them happy even after the death of their son. Matthew also accepts responsibility for what he did and Sister Helen explains to him that by doing that he is now a son of God and can die with dignity. This is what was needed for Matthew, as a person.

Ishmael Beah’s Families free essay sample

Familys in a childs life has the most impact on them. It shows them how to grow up and who to trust. In the book â€Å"A Long Way Home† by Ismael Beah, is a true memoir about a boy named Ismael Beah who grows up with many struggles and no family. He was only about twelve years old when he was performing at a rap group and his village was attacked by the Civil War in Sierra Leone leaving him and his group of friends homeless without their families. While they are alone they struggle finding food and a shelter in different villages. While Ishmael is  looking for his family in different villages, he is captured by Lieutenant Jabati which turns him into a boy soldier killing innocent people and making him addicted to drugs. He is then found by UNICEF which puts him in rehab to help him find a future and fix what has happened to him in the past. We will write a custom essay sample on Ishmael Beah’s Families or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page But it was not easy for him to express himself, until he finds a nurse named Esther who helps him express himself by giving him a walkman with rap; which helped him express what has happened in his past. He is then welcomed to live with his Uncle Tommy in Sierra Leone, who is his next new father figure. He is then more confident about himself and shares his storys with the United Nations in New York. Which helps him meet his foster mom named Laura Simms who helps brighten up his future and moves then lets him move to the United States with her. Ishmael then later returns to Freetown, Sierra Leone to live with Uncle Tommy again and while he is there the Civil War returns. His Uncle Tommys dies and then Ishmael moves back to the United States to live a new life. While Ishmael was growing up he never really had a real family. But he had many people to replace being in his own family, who gave shelter and trust. The people who played a role were Lieutenant Jabati, Esther, Uncle Tommy, and Laura Simms. If Ishmael had grown up with a family he would have probably been shaped very different then having to go through the suffering he had gone through. And Ishmael would have learned better things growing up with a family. During Ishmaels struggle he finds a family figure which keeps him surving with not much help. The first person to play a role as a family member is The Army Lietenant. He was found to  be a father figure to Ishmael because he teaches him to be a soldier by brainwashing him with drugs. In the book it says, â€Å" The boys and the other soldiers who were the audience clapped I was given the rank of junior lieutenant. We celebrated that day’s achievment with more drugs.. †(125). Also he had felt as a father figure because just like his father before he had past away the Lieutenant loved shakespeare. Another big point was that while he was a boy soldier and before that he had lost lots of friends which had made him put all his trust into the Lieutenant. Another point is that he had always called all the shots and this made him give respect. His last example is that he had erased Ishmaels name and turned it into â€Å"Green Snake† which makes Ishmael fell like he had created a new person and the old him was gone. All of these things had made Ishmael look up to the Lieutenant as a huge father figure but when the Lietenant had let him go to UNICEF he had felt very sad and betrayed. Another family figure which Ishmael finds during his struggle and finding out who he is was is his nurse Esther. Esther is a huge part which helps him survive becuase she buys him a  walkman. The music is helping him heal and is helping him get through his migraines from the drugs that the Lieutenant made him use and the hurtful memories he had. While letting out his emotion with Esther he is saving himseld from himself because if he had not let out his memories the pain would stay with in him. Even though it was hard for Ishmael to trust someone after being betrayed by the Lieutenant he had for the first time again. It was easy for him because Esther had made him feel as him she was his mother or sister by helping him feel love and being  around the same age as him. The third person who had Ishmael been a family figure to Ishmael was his Uncle Tommy who he had looked up to as a father figure. His Uncle Tommy started to visit him every weekened and started gaining trust. When he was let out of rehab Uncle Tommy took him in like a son. The reason why he had been a huge help because many people had known about his past and did not want to take Ishmael in to there house knowing he had been through a lot and could snap but his uncle tommy had looked beside that and wanted to give him a future. His Uncle Tommy wanted to give him love, acceptance, and wanted Ishmael to be a child again like he couldnt be. In the book it says â€Å"all I could think about was the discovery of a family I never thought existed. I was happy, but I had become accustomed to not showing it† (178). This is showing that ot had been making it a lot easier for Ishmael to heal from all of his horrible past again but he had not healed up all the way yet. Last but not least while Ishmael was at the United Nation Conference in New York city he had ran into a story teller named Laura Simms. After the conference she had talked to many kids  but had found Ishmael to be very special. So when he goes back to Sierra Leone she sends him money and he moves back and she becomes his foster mom. All this had made Ishmael feel wanted and loved again. With the love that Laura had showed him and compassion it had made it easier for ishameal to clear the road block to trusting and having a good future. She had also been a good Foster mom because even though she had known the kind of struggle he had in the past she had still took him in to her safe and peaceful home. In conclusion the importance to having a family while growing up can shape your future and  who you are. Ishmael had struggled since he was twelve years old and has had four different people play a family role in his life. It was either Lieutenant Jabati who was looked on as a father figure, Esther who was looked at as a sister and a mother, Uncle Tommy who was looked at as a father figure, and last but not least Laura Simms who was looked at as a mother figure. I believe every child should live in a house with a family and food because if it wasnt for all of these friends and families he would probably not have made it to succed and be where he is now, a new person.

Creative Writing Coursework Essays

Creative Writing Coursework Essays Creative Writing Coursework Essay Creative Writing Coursework Essay Essay Topic: Creative The silence in the dark and dingy room was so loud it was almost waiting to be shattered. The dampness was filling the room. Every breath taken of the air tasted stale and dead. Cobwebs filled every corner in the room. The dust was a carpet for the floor. The room eagerly waited to see the next victim and it wouldnt have to wait for long. Its blood lust was here stinking and putrid like a rotting jailer. This room imprisoned many tortured memories. The sounds of screaming and desperate crying trapped for all eternity. The decaying old oak door stabbed the silence in the room, as it opened. It sounded like nails on a blackboard, the sound that sends shivers down your spine. A sudden stench of an infested swamp cluttered the room. Deep and powerful footsteps echoed on the four walls, belongs to a tall man with a figure like a bull. With every footstep taken his feet were indented in the dust, as if he was walked on snow. The man was dragging an old feeble bloke ac ross the floor with his beard running along side him. Two other men crab walk in carrying a wooden headrest, and a sword. A sword that has taken more lives than disease itself. The old mans head was placed upon the rest. The bull-like man pulled a shiny black mask over his face with great dignity. He picked up the magnificent sword, even in this room the sword still glowed. The man was waiting for his life to be ended, he pleading his innocence.Death was sliding from the damp lifeless walls, looking upon his next victim. His smirk was growing bigger by the second. Almost impatient he crawled down onto the floor. Blood surrounding him from the previous criminals. The droplets were starting to set, each footstep taken vibrated them. Death now staring his next child in the eyes coldly. The sword is drawn back behind the masked mans head. It swoops down fiercely. Almost in slow motion the sword breaks the surface of the skin. Then cracks the spine. The head fell and hit the ground with a hard thud, piercing my eardrums. Blood spurted from his headless body, staining the dust. The blood now trickling. Now stopped, and the room silent once more. Death is pleased and disappears into the moist, misty air. Until the next time.

An Overview of Historic Preservation

An Overview of Historic Preservation Historic preservation is a movement in planning designed to conserve old buildings and areas in an effort to tie a places history to its population and culture. It is also an essential component to green building in that it reuses structures that are already present as opposed to new construction. Additionally, historic preservation can help a city become more competitive because historic, unique buildings give areas more prominence when compared to the homogeneous skyscrapers that dominate in many large cities. It is important to note, however, that historic preservation is a term used only in the United States and it did not gain prominence until the 1960s when it started in response to urban renewal, an earlier failed planning movement. Other English-speaking countries often use the term heritage conservation to refer to the same process while architectural conservation refers just to the preservation of buildings. Other terms include urban conservation, landscape preservation, built environment/heritage conservation, and immovable object conservation. History of Historic Preservation Although the actual term historic preservation did not become popular until the 1960s, the act of conserving historic places dates back to the mid-17th Century. At this time, wealthy Englishmen consistently collected historic artifacts, leading to their preservation. It was not until 1913 though that historic preservation became a part of English law. In that year the Ancient Monuments Act in the United Kingdom officially preserved structures there with historical interest. In 1944, preservation became a major component to planning in the U.K. when the Town and Country Planning Act put the preservation of historic places into the forefront of laws and approval of planning projects. In 1990, another Town and Country Planning Act passed and the protection of public buildings grew even more. In the United States, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities was founded in 1889 in Richmond, Virginia as the first state historic preservation group in the country. From there, other areas followed suit and in 1930, Simons and Lapham, an architectural firm, helped created the first historic preservation law in South Carolina. Shortly thereafter, the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana became the second area to fall under a new preservation law. The preservation of historic places then hit the national scene in 1949 when the U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservation developed a specific set of goals for preservation. The organization’s mission statement claimed that it aimed to protect structures providing leadership and education and that it also wanted to save America’s diverse historic places and revitalize [its] communities. Historic preservation then became a part of the curriculum at many universities in the U.S. and the world that taught urban planning. In the U.S., historic preservation became a large component in the planning profession in the 1960s after urban renewal threatened to destroy many of the nation’s most historic places in major cities like Boston, Massachusetts and Baltimore, Maryland. Divisions of Historic Places Within planning, there are three main divisions of historic areas. The first and most important to planning is the historic district. In the United States, this is a group of buildings, properties, and/or other sites that are said to be historically significant and in need of protection/redevelopment. Outside of the U.S., similar places are often called conservation areas. This is a common term used in Canada, India, New Zealand, and the U.K. to designate places with historical natural features, cultural areas, or animals to be protected. Historic parks are the second division of areas within historic preservation while historic landscapes are the third. Significance in Planning Historic preservation is important to urban planning because it represents an effort to conserve old building styles. In doing so, it forces planners to identify and work around the protected places. This usually means the insides of buildings are renovated for prestigious office, retail, or residential space, which can result in a competitive downtown as rents are normally high in these areas because they are popular gathering places. In addition, historic preservation also results in a less homogenized downtown landscape. In many new cities, the skyline is dominated by glass, steel, and concrete skyscrapers. Older cities that have had their historic buildings preserved may have these but they also have interesting older buildings. For example in Boston, there are new skyscrapers, but the renovated Faneuil Hall shows the importance of the areas history and also serves as a meeting place for the citys population. This represents a good combination of the new and old but also shows one of the main goals of historic preservation. Criticisms of Historic Preservation Like many movements in planning and urban design, historic preservation has had a number of criticisms. The largest is the cost. While it might not be more expensive to renovate old buildings instead of building new, the historic buildings are often smaller and therefore cannot accommodate as many businesses or people. This raises rents and forces lower income uses to relocate. In addition, critics say the popular style of newer high rise buildings can cause the smaller, old buildings to become dwarfed and undesirable. Despite these criticisms, historic preservation has been an important part of urban planning. As such, many cities around the world today were able to retain their historic buildings so future generations can see what cities may have looked like in the past and recognize that times culture through its architecture.
